FluidSynth is a real-time MIDI synthesizer, for use directly in CLI and as a background process and resource for other applications, including GUI wrappers. It generates its tones using SF2 soundfonts, and is based on the SoundFont 2 specifications.

Features:

  • Produces audio signals from MIDI streams
  • SoundFont 2 support
  • Realtime effect modulation using SoundFont 2.01 modulators
  • Built in command line shell
  • Playback of MIDI files
  • Cross platform support (Linux, Mac OSX and Windows to name a few)

Many different projects and environments use FluidSynth to deliver audio output from MIDI. Desktop environments can be configured thus, for sound cards with no built-in MIDI capability. Qsynth and FluidSynth-DSSI both provide GUIs, and there are others.
