Popular linux applications that allow Qsynth (and other FluidSynth frontends) for .sf2 files, and Linuxsampler for .gig files.
Aside from soundfonts, you might also want to browser other Softsynths And Samplers.
towards a linuxaudio.org soundfont collection
Inspired by recent discussions on the linux-audio-user mailing list, linuxaudio.org is considering to host a collection of free soundfonts.
ideas/brainstorm
- just collect references to existing resources.
- in combination with (1) - mirror some external sf as plain http index & txt readme
- mirror or collaborate/extend existing solutions. (eg. http://sounds.resonance.org )
- use a wiki or CMS to tag, archive and comment on sound-fonts
