Renoise

  • Renoise is a modernized music composition and production environment based on the design principles of the module tracker, specifically on the NoiseTrekker software by the late Juan Antonio Arguelles Rius (a.k.a. Arguru). Renoise's modernization expands the basic tracker design into a complete music production environment, with support for FX and instrument plugins, flexible audio output, MIDI I/O, synchronization capabilities, integral instruments, and parameter automation. The Linux version adds support for LADSPA plugins, native Linux VSTs, and JACK. Obviously the Linux version does not support OS-specific features of the Win/Mac releases (VST/VSTi plugins, ASIO), but in all other respects the platform versions are designed to be identical in form and function.

UltraMixer

  • Ultramixer is a DJ mixing software which enables you to mix digital music in various formats such as MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, WAV or CDs in real time. All you need is a sound card. The DJ's turntables are replaced by two digital SoundPlayers, the “vinyls” are available within seconds through the integrated FileArchive. There are three versions of UltraMixer available: the Free Edition and the Basic Edition for private users and the Professional Edition for high demands and commerical use. All versions are integrated in one program, and can be activated through the appropriate licence keys. This enables the user to switch to a more advanced version without any problems. Note: UltraMixer does not have VST plug-in support.

VST-support

Note: VST's that can be used in Linux come in two flavors:

  • Natively compiled VST plug-ins, also known as LinuxVST's. These are plug-ins that are compiled or can be compiled on Linux systems with the help of either the Steinberg header files from the VST SDK or the Vestige header (the open source equivalent of the Steinberg headers).
  • VST's compiled for Windows. These can be used with the help of Wine and any host that supports Windows VST's.

Linux Multimedia Distros with VST support

If you want to work with VST plugins and the like, there are some of the great Linux Multimedia Distros with good out-of-the-box VST support. Most notably:

Commercial VSTs for Linux

  • discoDSP Discovery R3 8 oscillators Virtual Analog VSTi Synthesizer featuring 4 layers, 2X oversampling/undersampling, built-in arpeggiator, sync, FM, 8 filter types, panning modulation, stereo delay and gate effects. Imports Nord Lead 2 SysEx data.
  • Loomer is a producer of high quality audio software for Linux, Mac and Windows.
  • LinuxDSP offers high quality DSP and effects plug-ins, some also available as LinuxVST's.
  • Pianoteq High quality piano emulation.

VST plugins recommendations by LinuxMusicians

(this is not a list of the best plugins, just plugins which works well)

  • SQ8L SQ80-emulating synth (works OK with FST)
  • GVST This site contains several free VST effects and instruments for Windows. For the main part they are designed to be simple, light-weight and efficient, although some are more ambitious and some more experimental. They have been reported to work OK with FST or Ardourvst. For your auto-tuning purposes, this is a good choice.

Tools for using VST on Linux

FeSTige

  • FeSTige is a GUI for fst and dssi-vst, allowing you to run Windows VST plugins on Linux.

This is done through Wine, where the application hosts the plugin and receives/sends audio and MIDI events through JACK. * FeSTige is (soon) replaced by Carla.

FST

  • FST Open Source VST support on GNU/Linux. Steinberg SDK isn't needed. Unless you use apps like Rosegarden or Qtractor, FST is probably your best bet if you want to use VST. Especially when using Ardour, FST is recommended, most of the time you even better use FST and Ardour instead of Ardourvst.

DSSI-VST

* Dssi-VST The dssi-vst package contains a wrapper plugin for Windows VSTs that enables them to be used by DSSI hosts running on Linux or similar on i386, using Wine. dssi-vst was written by Chris Cannam. Steinberg SDK isn't needed. If you use apps like Rosegarden or Qtractor, DSSI-VST might be a good choice.

Wineasio

  • Wineasio provides an ASIO to JACK driver for WINE. ASIO is the most common Windows low-latency driver, so is commonly used in audio workstation programs. (Wine's built-in JACK transport isn't a Windows ASIO driver.)

JOST

  • JOST A Host For Native Linux VST Plugins
